A New Standard of Beauty

Elle France features “plus-size” model Tara Lynn in their April issue. Could it be that the fashion industry will continue its transition to models of all sizes? If we keep writing about it, the mags we’ll keep doing it. So here we go…

These pictures are stunning, without a doubt. Tara is beautiful, and she has a strong voice. In the short interview accompanying the spread, Tara explains her personal body image:

“I took back the control over my own health, and I accepted the fact that my silhouette will never match up with the image of beauty with which we are constantly bombarded.”

I’m not sure the fashion world itself will get the message right anytime soon. Within the first paragraph, the writer exclaims:

“Tara is who she is, she eats what she wants to eat. It’s great!”

But Tara’s really telling us a story about healthy body, healthy mind. When she was working as an au pair, the little girl she looked after came home and said that her friends had called Tara fat, but that she still loved her. After which Tara jogged an hour and a half a day, went on a diet that had her perpetually hungry and lost 30kg. She was miserable. So she loosened her regime and regained 10kg, and was able to be happy again.

Healthy, happy, accepting, those are the keys. We will post Tara’s spreads, Crystal Renn’s spreads, Candice Huffine’s spreads, Kasia Pilewicz spreads, and we will not call them “plus size.” They are beautiful women and talented models, and we want to see more.
